The Ampelograph

This is a newsletter about wine, and about the thousands of different varietals of wine grapes in use to make the fermented beverage around the world.

These range from the ultra familiar to new hybrids or living antiques with barely a few hectares planted. This biodiversity exists in many places around the world because humans have been cultivating grape vines for wine production. In some places the practice is newer and in others it might stretch back centuries or millennia. It’s an engagement with a plant that we can trace back into archaeological time.

Ampelography is the branch of botany about grape vines.
